After Monday’s tutorial on making a wooden cup Hendrik asked whether I had a photo of the basic tools needed for the task. I do indeed and here they are:
This is the usual selection of tools I’d use for everyday tasks including carving the cup:
You’ll notice there are two knives. Because my usual knife is quite heavy and has a thick blade I find it useful to have a smaller lighter knife for fine work. However, if I’m looking to reduce weight I often simply replace both of them with a Mora. This is a good all rounder – strong enough for most tasks and fine enough for more fiddly work.
The saw is very useful for general tasks around camp. One of the great features of this particular model, the Bahco Laplander, is the fact that the blade locks shut as well as locking open. This can avoid nasty accidents when fishing it out of a rucksack.
The crook knife is made in Sweden – seems to be a pattern here! – by S. Djärv Hantverk AB of Avesta. They’re not cheap but are very good quality. If you’re in the market for a crook knife there’s an interesting crook knife comparison on the Association of Pole Lathe Turner’s website.
